American Museum of Magic – Marshall, Michigan

Filled with magicians’ artifacts is the American Museum of Magic in the small town of Marshall, Michigan.  The museum is the largest privately owned museum of it’s kind which is open to the public.  Robert Lund was a writer, historian and collector and put together the collection for the public to see and learn from.  The purpose of the museum is to educate.  The Museum is devoted to magic as entertainment and not the occult.

There are nearly a million items from the 15th century to the present day in the two buildings that comprise the museum.  Located in the Historic District of Marshall, Michigan.  Marshall is located midway between Chicago and Detroit.

The museum has items from throughout the world.  There are authentic
specimens of illusions equipment, advertising, lithographs, posters, publicity, conjuring apparatus, props, scrapbooks, route books, films, videotapes, recordings, lettersphotographs, traveling cases, trunks, costumes, magic sets,
figurines, artwork, graphics, sculptures, personal items and extensive memorabilia of other kinds.

There are approximately 15,000 books related to conjuring in the Musueum Library.  Even informative books telling the story of the “Milk Can” and “Overboard Box” escape equipment used by Houdini.  There are also over 20,000 photographs from the Irving Desfor Collection of Photographs and many manuscripts on teh art of magic.

The Museum continues to grow with the accumulation of more items and has expanded way beyond what it was when it was first opened so even if you have been there in the past there is probably something new to show you on your return trip.

The Museum first opened to the public in 1978 with the second building opening in 1999.

The Museum also has Lectures which are open to the public.  Each one is different and aimed at educating you on the art of magic.
